The furious Conservative leader told senior shadow ministers and party grandees - including some of his closest allies - to write out cheques for thousands of pounds.

He warned any who refused that they would be thrown out of the party.

The move left Labour and the Liberal Democrats scrambling to catch up.

Mr Cameron took the lead by barring all Conservative MPs from making claims for furniture, food and household goods with immediate effect.

They will also have to publish details of expenses claims on the internet as soon as they make them.

And he has outlawed the dub...
