POLICE community support officers (PCSOs) are put in a uniform, given the briefest of training and then sent out on the streets. They may reassure people who are under the misapprehension they are police officers, but when a problem occurs, they have to call for a professional like me to deal with the situation.

What is the cost of these support officers and why has that money not been better used in order to train more police officers? Government targets have been set with regard to the appointment of PCSOs. When will someone in a position of authority be brave enough to stand up and say they have made a huge mistake? As for the appointment of two 16- year-old PCSOs, no doubt a senior police officer will get a promotion on the strength of this act of folly.
