CASH-STRAPPED pensioners withdrew more than Pounds 1 billion from the value of their homes last year, according to the Council Of Mortgage Lenders.

But research by the charity Age Concern shows that fears of up- front charges amounting to more than Pounds 1,000 are putting many more elderly people off cashing in on the wealth in their homes.
