ESKER HILLS Shane Lowry won a marathon encounter with Castles Ryan Boal in the quarterfinal of the West of Ireland championship at County Sligo to book his place in the last four. One down playing the final hole, Lowry was staring defeat in the face before holing a 25-foot putt to force tie holes. He was triumphant with a par at the second, closing out the match of the tournament in which the players fired 12 birdies between them.

I saw a line pretty quickly, said Lowry, the pre-tournament favourite, of his championship-saving putt at the 18th. It was just outside the right and I just kept telling myself not to leave it short. Ryan just held so many good putts I couldnt shrug him off.
