HOW maddening for the Americans to see the European who can never win at a major championship turn into the player who can never lose at the Ryder Cup.
'The Pest' is how Sergio Garcia is described in the latest issue of U.S. magazine Golf Digest. 'The cursed enemy that you wish were on your side.' It is not just the fist-pumping or the fact he gets in their faces as he holes another crucial putt that warrants such a description; it is the fact he represents everything generally thought to be missing from the U.S. team. On the one hand you have Hunter Mahan crassly comparing the Ryder Cup to slavery; on the other you have Garcia, eyes ablaze, proclaiming: 'It is the one event I simply couldn't imagine doing without.' The Americans have had their noses rubbed in it once before like this, of course.
