A CONTROVERSIAL proposal for 5,000 new homes in West Dublin was rejected last night by South Dublin Council.

If given the go-ahead, the project would have led to the rezoning of 425 acres of greenfield agricultural land - including 30 acres owned by Laurence Harney, a brother of Health Minister Mary Harney.
