WITH the credit crunch biting harder than a deranged rottweiler, British racing braced itself for a backlash on the opening day of its most prestigious sales yesterday.

But it proved nowhere near as bleak as the autumn skies hanging over the Tattersalls Sales ring at Newmarket and a first-day drop in average prices of 10 per cent compared to last year's overall figures was greeted with a huge sigh of relief.
