BACK in 1997, when I was writing to urge a ' no' vote in our last referendum, I remarked on the dishonesty of the 'yes' campaign: dishonest because it was twofaced.

Donald Dewar and Labour were backing devolution as 'a settlement for the better governance of Scotland and the United Kingdom'. Alex Salmond and the SNP were backing it as the first step towards the break-up of the United Kingdom.
