WHY say football legend Sir Bobby Robson 'lost the battle' against cancer? He was always a winner.
And why use war metaphors -- brave, hero and fight -- to describe cancer patients? Cowards get cancer, too. Gods, praying, energy fields and positive thinking have no place in curing cancer, though they may be a comfort to patients. Cancer is undiscriminating and there are incalculable external and internal factors that influence the outcome. Patients such as me are under enough stress coping with gruelling rounds of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and other energy- sapping treatments without being urged to 'fight' our illness. Cancer isn't a grotesque monster against which you can take up arms, but an illness in which cells multiply uncontrollably, destroying healthy tissue.
