ANOTHER example of how reductions in the bank base rate are unsuitable for the economic situation is the news that thousands of borrowers are paying off more of their mortgages. So not all mortgagees are on the breadline, as the Government would have us believe. Many are using the savings brought about by the mortgage rate reductions, demanded of the lenders by the Government, to pay off their mortgages early, and all this at the expense of savers who are the Government's scapegoats.

The time has come for savers to hit back at the incompetence of this Government. How about a savings strike, followed by a 10 per cent withdrawal of funds? Gordon's howls would be heard across the land.
