WHEN Coleridge wrote his famous lines on Kubla Khan's stately pleasure dome in 'Xanadu' (Shang-Tu, north of Beijing) you'd think he was getting his inspiration from somewhere more exotic than Somerset.

But the West Country county had captivated him on an earlier visit and he moved into a tiny cottage in the village of Nether Stowey in 1797 with his wife and baby son.
