WORK started yesterday on a Pounds 175million project to close the so-called 'Cumberland Gap' in the motorway network between Scotland and England.

The scheme, which followed a public inquiry, will upgrade a 5.8- mile stretch of the A74 between Carlisle and Guards Mill, just south of Gretna, to full motorway status.
