IT'S very easy to condemn people when they are not here to reply. The critics are probably descended from sheep stealers.

Standards and practices have changed so much in 200 years - it was still legal to trade in slaves. Also the percentage of opium sold was only a small fraction of the total goods that Jardine Matheson traded in. It was merchants such as these that made the UK important in the 19th century.
