JONNY Wilkinson steps into a greyhound stadium in the far west of Ireland tonight, the first stop on a hazardous road towards his next global goal.

Relieved just to be playing again for the first time since an operation to save his career at the age of 24, he leads Newcastle against Connacht in Galway with the longterm target clear at the back of his mind: 'To be part of the first team to win back-to-back World Cups.' But there are questions to be answered, not least in calculating the effect of nerve damage in his shoulder. After weeks of bruising contact in training, Wilkinson is ready and Connacht are delighted at their good fortune to be hosting the return of a player lauded by their coach Michael Bradley as 'a national treasure'.
