WHEN Protherics was formed back in 1999, following the merger of two laggards of the biotech sector, Proteus International and Therapeutic Antibodies, one City hack uncharitably dubbed the union 'a merger of the weaklings'.

Things have moved on since then. The firm is now one of the strongest-quoted fledgling drugs developers, with two products on the market, a potential blockbuster in the clinic and more than enough cash in the bank to fund its current research programme.
