A-LEVEL results will be broken down to help universities distinguish between those with straight As.

Besides seeing the overall grade, admissions tutors will be able to find out how a student did in each of the six units of exams and coursework which make up an A-level. This could mean the brightest teenagers having to score a perfect 18 As in their three exams to win places on the most popular courses.
