THE time is 2.30am. We have just stepped from a BA flight and are hurtling towards the comforts of the Taj Mahal hotel in New Delhi. Actually, no, we are not hurtling at all - it just feels like that. The dark road is full of creaking, elderly lorries, mostly without rear lights; and the air is filled with honking.

Thank heavens for the comforting presence of a guide who met us off the flight and for an Indian driver. Honk, honk! He is slipstreaming another lorry, on the back of which is painted the usual message: 'Horn please.' Honk honk. . . and the lorry drivers, who never use their mirrors, move over like Pavlov's dog at the sound.
