JESSICA FLORENCE'S adorable pictures of her rat Bug (Mail) remind me of my 32 happy years of 'ratification'. Rats are friendly, intelligent and clean, and, in my experience, they never bite. I kept several rats and each had a different character.
There was Fricka who, on hearing Wagner, stood up tall, tiny hands on chest and quivered her whiskers. Wotan, big and round like a tennis ball, was laid-back in the literal sense. He did everything -- washing (which rats do obsessively) and eating -- lying on his back.
