I'M GLAD Max Hastings enjoyed Syria (Mail), but it was less encouraging to read his suggestion that it might be because he is 'naive about the nastiness of some Middle Eastern societies'.

Naivety is not as important as a willingness to separate perceptions of Middle Eastern politics from the daily life of ordinary people.
