It crashed to a historic low of around 20 per cent in the European elections and was beaten by the resurgent UK Independence Party. With early results coming in, the Tories were on course to win the day, with UKIP second, Labour third and the LibDems a disappointing fourth.

It was a worse collapse for Labour than the Tories ever endured, even at their lowest ebb.
