MOST football fans would have expected fate to have blown the fulltime whistle on referee Eddie Norton a long time ago. But he's defied all the form and record books by still calling the shots in the centre circle at the ripe old age of 78. Scotland's oldest referee has been dishing out the red cards for more than three decades and despite being well past pensionable age, the dedicated father of four has no intention of hanging up his boots just yet.

The former teacher said yesterday: 'I've been going for much longer than any professional footballer could. But I've never thought about giving it up. I wouldn't know what to do with my weekends to be honest. 'I used to train with the younger referees but stopped that because I felt it was getting a bit too much for me.
