Summary

DESPITE the defence budget being dwarfed by social security and health spending, David Cameron has joined Vince Cable MP in thinking the nation's financial crisis can be solved by defence cuts. Having guessed that defence cuts might be more popular than trying to untangle the 80,000 or so 'payroll vote' employees New Labour has embedded in our public services, Messrs Cable and Cameron set about brainwashing themselves into thinking it's safe to do this. This accounts for the conviction that Russia poses no threat to the UK. Yet Russia not only poses a threat, but also thinks nothing of commissioning murder in the middle of London by the most extravagant means. It's self-delusion to assess the threat from Russia as 'nil or close to nil' because politicians desperately want the potentially popular choice of defence cuts to be right. There's no reason why a Trident replacement should be massively expensive. Very little of the missile itself needs a redesign.

What's needed is a more agile re-entry vehicle and a new warhead that's safer and cheaper.
