THE number of businesses feeling the pain in the retail market has hit the highest level for three years, according to a study by accountancy firm Grant Thornton.

And it is a trend that is set to continue with industry veteran Lord Harris of Peckham, chairman of the Carpetright chain, warning 2009 could be one of the worst for 50 years.
