SOMETIMES t h e losers make a deeper impression than the winners, and it will seem somewhat fitting if the guy who emerged from defeat with honour after last year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Richard Hughes, soars the heights at Longchamp on Sunday.

Just minutes after last year's race, when all hell had broken out in the Bois de Boulogne with the announcement of a stewards inquiry, Hughes was dignity personified. And yet he had plenty to gain if the stewards decided in favour of his mount, Youmzain, who had finished runner-up in the Arc just a head behind Dylan Thomas, ridden by Kieren Fallon.
