RIO Tinto's board is understood to be weighing up plans to split its headquarters between London and Melbourne to appease the Australian authorities over its Pounds 14bn tie-up with Chinese state-run aluminium group Chinalco.

It emerged as Jan du Plessis, chairman of British American Tobacco, was appointed to the same position at Rio. The Anglo- Australian miner's current chairman Paul Skinner is to retire, as planned, on April 20.
