THE idea that we should cull farmers instead of badgers (Letters) was obviously tongue-in-cheek but think about it. Words associated with Were the 'farmer' seem to include 'compensation', 'subsidy' and 'set-aside'.

Shouldn't a farm be run as a business like any other, with risks which must be assessed and a responsibility to insure against those risks? In the 2001 foot and mouth outbreak, one farmer received Pounds 4.2million when his animals were slaughtered. This was taxpayers' money.
