HORACIO ELIZONDO, the referee who sent off Wayne Rooney during England's World Cup quarterfinal defeat to Portugal, has defended his decision.

The Argentine official told FourFourTwo magazine: 'He stamped on Ricardo Carvalho's groin and that merited the dismissal. That is a straight red card in any country.' Elizondo also felt Rooney should have spent more time worrying about his own performance than that of the referee and officials.
