THE assertion that Britain 'appeared in the 18th century' (Letters) is mistaken. This island was originally called Alba or Albion, but the Romans changed it to Britannia.

The Normans in the 11th century used the term More Bretagne to differentiate the island from their smaller neighbour, Bretagne (Brittany) and Great Britain became the accepted name.
