IF IT might be said that the advent of electricity banished the ghosts from Ireland, well then - on this summer's evidence - it could also be said that, by and large, the advent of motorways has banished the hitch-hikers from Ireland.

True, there are still a few strays perched on minor roads like the remnants of an almost extinct migratory species that require a World Wildlife Organisation protection order. But their former summer breeding sites - like Newland's Cross where large flocks would converge during my youth - are now multi-lane motorways with signs outlawing this most friendly form of travel.
