COLIN MONTGOMERIE wept tears of joy last night after the most traumatic year of his life ended with him sinking the putt that won the Ryder Cup for Europe.

Five years after being the subject of sickening abuse at Brookline, Monty's name was chanted all down the 18th hole as Europe completed a record 181/2-91/2 demolition of the Americans. 'This is very emotional for me, probably more so than most,' said Monty, who has never lost in seven Ryder Cup singles matches but has been troubled since his recent marital break-up and divorce.
