ONE SHOULD not get too depressed by politics. There are so many other things to think about in life. But I admit that over the past few weeks I have been a bit down in the dumps despite myself.

The corruption of MPs is depressing, especially when one had thought some of them fine, upstanding men or women. The prospect of Gordon Brown lurching on for another year while Britain slides farther downhill also makes one want to turn one's head to the wall. The wretched man no longer has control over the Cabinet, let alone the country.

There is another worry that has been lowering my spirits even more. When Gordon Brown has gone, and MPs have at least started to clean up their act, it will still be there. Until or unless something is done, we will continue to be poorly governed, no matter which party is in power.
