NEW car sales have hit their lowest level since the 1960s, when the favourite mode of transport was the mini and Michael Caine and his fictitious team of bullion thieves used the dinky motors to navigate the sewers of Turin in the classic film The Italian Job (pictured).

According to figures from the Society of Motor Manufactures & Traders, sales of new cars are similarly heading down the drain after sliding 19pc to 63,225 last month.
