IF I didn't know better it would be my guess that Bank of England governor Mervyn King had been taking speechwriting lessons from Alan Greenspan, the chairman of America's Federal Reserve.

The objective of Greenspan's public pronouncements is to be as elliptical as possible. Indeed, hordes of Wall Street experts earn their living as Fed watchers, interpreting the master's voice.
