BRITONS are saving less than they have since records began in 1959. Households put away only [pounds]2.6billion in the first three months of this year, down from [pounds]7billion in the previous quarter, an Office for National Statistics report revealed yesterday.

It suggests the economy is on the brink of recession, with growth from January to March only 0.3 per cent, the lowest level in three years.
