THE FA board are expected to grant a stay of execution to the Premier League's '39 steps' at their meeting tomorrow, despite the worldwide derision towards the international round from FIFA president Sepp Blatter downwards.

A queue of MPs were lining up to put the boot in at a Department of Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee meeting yesterday, where the Premier League plan being championed by its chief executive, Richard Scudamore, was variously described as 'daft', 'completely barmy', 'bent', 'fatally flawed' and 'the worst idea ever'. Even Scudamore admitted for the first time that he needed the support of FIFA, the FA and Football League to make his castigated initiative work.
