I WAS a self-harmer (Letters), not only as a teenager but into my 20s. It's not just 'something that teenagers do' -- an increasing number of adults do it, too. I also had to endure my mother pleading with me to stop and chastising me when I didn't.

Self-harming isn't a hobby and it's not something teenagers just happen to go through: it's a potential sign of mental illness. Whatever 'humiliation' a mother might feel because her daughter selfharms will be nothing in comparison to the pain and mental anguish her daughter is going through. Trying to humiliate the poor girl into submission can only backfire on the parent and make her daughter feel worse.
