A BOOK that never gathers cobwebs in this house is A J Liebling's The Sweet Science, a collection of essays once voted rather grandly the best American sports book of all time.
'Watching a fight on television,' former war correspondent Liebling wrote in a piece entitled Boxing With The Naked Eye, 'has always seemed to me a poor substitute for being there.' Even that 'poor substitute' can become inaccessible to many when the fight takes place in the middle of the night on a non-terrestrial channel.
