AT just after 6pm today, I will leave the House of Commons. I do not anticipate ever darkening its doors again. After 43 years as an MP, I don't think I would like to come into the House as a non- member.

Why I Won't Shed a Tear As I Finally Leave the Commons ; Longest-Serving Mp Feels the Time has Come to Go

But as I take my leave, there is no tear in my eye or lump in my throat. My sadness came a quarter of a century ago in 1979 when, in the General Election of that year, many of my friends and contemporaries were defeated, never to return. Sadness comes from leaving people, not bricks and mortar, however beautiful.
