Summary
LAST week, there were several Government apologies which demonstrated its ineptitude in dealing with major issues of national interest. During that week I read of Giscard d'Estaing's comments which claimed effectively that the EU Treaty and EU Constitution were one and the same in all but wording. I also received a copy of a letter from Labour's EU Minister claiming that the Treaty was entirely different to the Constitution. This brought to mind the claims made by his predecessors, prior to their pre- 2005 election U- turn referendum pledge, that the Constitution was simply 'a tweaking of existing EU agreements'. It appears to me, that with virtually all of the EU member states aligning with Giscard d'Estaing's view, it is only a matter of time before the UK Government is obliged to issue another apology for their failure to comprehend. My hope is that the apology comes before the Treaty is signed rather than after!
