Summary
I AGREE crocodile tears are cheap (Mail) but is it not the 'stiff upper lip' kind of thinking that gets sensitive children bullied in the playground? Some people shed tears more easily than others; this doesn't mean they're looking for attention or 'playing the crowd'. As a child, I remember being absolutely mortified for crying but no matter how I tried, I couldn't stop the tears. I would hate to think that other children, or adults, like me would suffer because of this viewpoint.
To suggest that we only cry about reality TV or fabricated sob stories seems a massive generalisation. I admit I felt a wrench to see 16-year-old X Factor contestant Eoghan Quigg upset because of the departure of a fellow contestant, but why should I be ashamed to admit this? According to A. N. Wilson this makes me a bad person who knows nothing of the world outside 'reality' culture. He'll be happy (I hope) to know that I've taught refugees from the Congo and -- yes, I cried a few tears for them, too.See the full content of this document
