AS THE old train with the seaside prints in its carriages pulled into the station, my friend 'Gypsy' Dave Mills and I grabbed our bags and took a taxi to the hotel: bay window overlooking the promenade, lace curtains and cucumber sandwiches, a drunk porter and no TV.

Our taxi arrived to find the pier absolutely stuffed with young girls screaming at the arrival of The Walker Brothers. We watched in amazement as two attendants, wearing long coats and caps with the pier's name on the hatband, pushed a large wooden box on rollers up to The Walker Brothers' car.
As the hysterical girls crowded around, the attendants told one of them off in a fatherly fashion: 'Now, Veronica, I'll tell yer mam on ye if ye keep that oop.' Right up to the car door went the box, The Walker Brothers jumped in, the doors were closed and down the pier the box was pushed by the attendants.The girls followed, banging and clawing the box, screaming at the top of their lungs and poking their schoolgirl fingers through the airholes in vain.Gypsy and I were in tears of laughter.Then came our turn.
