A PLOY by MPs to smear the head of the Armed Forces over his expenses has backfired spectacularly after details of his spending revealed how frugal he actually is.

General Sir Richard Dannatt, the soon-toretire Chief of the General Staff, has claimed just Pounds 19,290.77 since 2005-06 - and cut costs by shopping at Tesco and Lidl.
