FOR those people who, without supporting independence, voted SNP at last year's Scottish elections one Nationalist manifesto commitment was particularly attractive: the pledge to recruit 1,000 extra police officers and put them on the beat. That promise has now been exposed as a hollow sham.
Retirement is taking a heavy toll of police numbers: 535 officers are leaving the service this year, but that figure will rocket to 970 next year. With the police service haemorrhaging manpower at that rate, simply maintaining its present strength will be a challenge.
