SCOTTISH rugby bosses have backed a controversial bid to establish a new professional franchise in London by asking their Twickenham counterparts to sanction what would be a groundbreaking move for European rugby.

Less than a month after announcing the closure of the loss- making Border Reivers, Murrayfield chief executive Gordon McKie yesterday confirmed a formal submission had been made to the RFU on behalf of a group of wealthy London-based businessmen about setting up a team to compete against sides from Scotland, Wales and Ireland in the cross-border Magners League.
