NO WONDER this dazzling plant is known as the Red Hot Poker. With such distinctive looks -- bright red flowers and strident stems -- it is sure to cause a riot in your garden.

Kniphofia has an exotic heritage, but it adapts well to Britain's soil conditions. A member of the Asphodelaceae family, it is a genus of plants related to the lily and includes 75 species that thrive on mountains, moorland swamps and grasslands native to South Africa. Some species have spread to Ethiopia, Kenya and Madagascar.
