KIERAN DONAGHY apologised yesterday for gesturing towards Mayo fans last Sunday but the All-Star insisted he was provoked by a fan who threw a piece of wood at him. Kerrys giant full-forward also claimed that coins, including a 50-cent piece, were hurled at him during the same game.

During the latter stages of Sundays NFL game in Castlebar, and in the heat of the moment, I used an inappropriate gesture towards the crowd, said Donaghy. I apologise unreservedly to spectators and all sports fans alike for any offence that I may have caused by this action. However, his contention that he was subject to missiles being launched from supporters raises serious questions for the GAA, and Mayo county board in particular.
