Summary
IN A little more than two weeks time, the nation will go to the polls. Ostensibly to return 12 MEPs to the European Parliament, two TDs to Dail Eireann - to fill the shoes of the late Seamus Brennan and Tony Gregory - and 1,627 councillors to the 114 local authorities, ranging from city councils to town councils, that run local government in this country.
In theory, it should be a magnificent exercise in participatory democracy at local level. The reality, however, is that the election campaigns being waged in every corner of this island have precious little to do with Europe, with constituency issues in Dublin South and Dublin Central or with parish pump politics.See the full content of this document
