Bill Oddie is in a suitably seasonal melancholic mood: 'People tend to think of spring as pretty and autumn as sad. But, beyond a doubt, autumn is my favourite season.' It is autumn now with mists and mellow fruitfulness, leaves changing colour through every shade of red, orange and yellow, and berries and fruit that have gone to ripe fulfilment.

Bill - along with presenters Kate Humble and Simon King - is back on our television screens with Autumnwatch, successor to Springwatch, the wildly popular nature programme that was the first to directly involve its viewers, and which was broadcast live, every evening, for two weeks, on BBC1.
