PEOPLE who collapse at home could soon be saved by a device that shocks the heart to make it beat again. Electronics firm Philips has become the first company to launch a defibrillator for home use that can be bought over the counter in High Street pharmacies.

The devices can now be used by people with just an hour's training. Most importantly, they will only shock people having a genuine heart attack, and cannot cause harm in those whose symptoms are wrongly diagnosed and who still have a heartbeat.
