QUESTIONMy grandparents gave us some old photographs of a Louth football team. On the back is written: Dermot O''Brien, captain. Could this also be the showband legend? THIS is, indeed, the self- same Dermot O'Brien, one-time GAA star and later an Irish musical hero.

Born in Ardee, Co. Louth, in October, 1932, he was passionate about the GAA as a young man and belonged to the St Mary's club in his home town. He also played for a year with Navan O'Mahony's.

Star at No.11 and No.1 [Eire Region]

Centre forward O'Brien won three Leinster senior football championships, in 1951, 1956 and 1960, but his career highlight was when he captained Louth to their last Sam Maguire success in 1957.

Louth, who had not won the All-Ireland since 1910, had beaten Dublin in the Leinster final that year and then went on to defeat Cork by 1-9 to 1-7 in the final.
